My sojourn to Hawaii, how to describe it? Amazing, magical, miraculous? I knew no words could describe it. I felt like I was there again, recapitulating my trip while flipping through the pages of my scrapbook. The azure water and black sand beaches. The eels undulating their way around the reefs, the other sealife. I turned the page and laughed. My two favorite crabs! I’d found them on the beach fighting eachother like two pugilists in an intense battle. And there was the picture, gloaming in Hawaii, the sky’s masterpiece artwork which brought back memories that I never knew it would. That was the night I met him and it felt like the world had stopped; the night that would change my life. My question, for better of for worse?

“I told her that I was going on a quick sojourn to grandma’s and I would come back the next day. I wasn’t gonna come back. I mean, how could I? She was so paranoid. She always acted like someone was out to get her. It was probably her boyfriend’s fault. He was so abusive of her. Even so, I do miss her. She was my mom, you know? And I feel bad for my sisters, having to deal with all the pain of running away.” That’s what she said to me. She sounded so apethetic, but then her eyes filled with tears. I miss her. So much I can’t take it. I know it wasn’t an accident–what happened to her. Someone did it. When I get my hands on them–I sware–I /will/ kill them. But for now, I’ll just endure this pain, this unbearable pain in my chest. Until then…

A loud, startling voice awakened Jessie from her brief sojourn to fantasy land. She rubbed her eyes sleepily as the daydreams quickly slipped from her memory. It had been the most perfect fantasy: he whispered softly in her ear as they lay side-by-side on the picnic blanket, finding invisible shapes in the buttermilk sky up above. She knew nothing like that would ever happen to her. Not now. Not after what she never knew was about to happen. She groggily stood, walking slowly to the door to find the source of the voice. She turned the knob, pushing the door open, only to find the gruesome spectacle of…

What makes us human? Is it love? Is it sorrow or pain? Watching people suffer? Watching someone die right before your eyes? Laughing at grandpa’s silly jokes? Remembering the sojourn you had to take when your sister died? or are we just creatures? Nothings, just matter with legs? Do we even matter? What is love? What is sorrow? What are grandpa’s silly jokes? We are but a speck of dust in this universe. But a speck of dust has a life. This speck of dust lives in a house, on a street, in a city. This speck of dust is resolute on finding the perfect iphone case for her phone (she changes every few days). This speck of dust thinks Ms. Silver should find a man with the name “Mr. Gold”. Then she could be, “Laura Silver Gold” Then her wedding song could be “Silver and Gold” from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. YAY!!!
